Chapter 6 - Goblin Business Solutions

It was only when we had the last of the food put away that we set to eating. Splug helped himself to six of the tacos while I had one of the beef and one of the chicken with goat cheese. The goat cheese made for a surprisingly good taco even if the Framework didn't recognize it as a new dish. It would have been an easy way to game the cooking system had I been able to just swap out an ingredient and come up with a new recipe.

I didn't hear any complaints from Splug when it came to trying the new food either. Had I not put the last four tacos into my storage space, he probably would have eaten them too. All I could do was hope that Greedal and his managers ate the fare with the same gusto.

"Well time for the part every cook hates," I announced as the goblin shoveled the last half taco into his mouth.

"What's that?"

"We gotta do the dishes."

Splug's fear was palpable as we both surveyed the disaster we had wrought on the kitchen. Countless bowls, trays, utensils, and plates littered every flat surface we had available. This wasn't to mention the multitude of appliances and cooking surfaces we had utilized. I’d never been the neatest cook either so flour, stands of lettuce, crumbs, and scraps had found their way all over the kitchen. I wanted to get back to camp, but this needed to be done as well.

"Leave it," Vrah said from the door, causing both of our heads to jerk her way. "Splug can handle the clean up. You and I need to have a conversation."

"That's alright," I answered back. "I can take a few minutes to clean up my mess. I'm not above that."

"I'm afraid I must insist," Vrah said, in a polite but firm tone. "This falls under Splug's positional duties, and I won't risk a grievance with the Mercantile Guild having you do something out of contract. Besides, time is really of the essence. My shift is going to end soon, and we do have a couple of things to go over."

"What position is that?" I asked, feeling my hackles rise despite her neutral tone.

"Unskilled Apprentice."

"Now hold on..."

"No, she is right," the goblin interrupted before I could go any further. "It is not the slight you think it is. I lack a business class or skills. Until I develop some, I am manual labor."

"You see,even he agrees," Vrah said, "Now come with me."

I have them both a dubious look before wiping my hands on a towel and tossing it on the sink. Splug for his part tried to give me a disarming smile and shoo me away. He meant well, but I still had my doubts. All the same I did need to get going. Being up half the night was starting to take its toll, and there was still the matter of climbing back into the sewer.

We walked in silence for a moment until we had passed by the other goblins working in the bullpen nearest the kitchen.
